I started to think about how I was going to replenish the calories I burned during my 48 mile run.
At this point, I run 6 miles in about 54 miles (or 9:00 a mile) and I burn about 900 calories an hour. So, for 8 miles at around 1:15, that averages 1,125 calories per 8-mile run. At that rate, I'd burn 3,375 calories a day (8 miles x 3 segments) and 6,750 calories overall through both days.
I could start with the Clif Shots, but they're only 100 calories a pop and I'd have a maximum of 2 per hour for a total of 200 calories. I'd still be down 925 calories. I can eat almonds as well, but I'm thinking I may need to go the junk food route to get more calorie dense foods into me.
I don't like the idea of eating things like Doritos or pizza while I'm running, but I know Dean Karnazes did it during his ultramarathons because he had exactly the same problem.
So what do you think? Any tips for consuming enough calories to keep me from fainting?

I was chatting with someone today and boiled potatoes were mentioned. Hmmm...
Let me know what charity you will go with and I'll pledge $0.50 per mile plus a dollar for the runner!
Nice thing you're doing, Greg!
I was going to say potatoes. Is there some kind of homemade drink you could make that will give you the calories you need? Maybe some mix of different drinks or something like that.
I can't imagine eating junk food and running. I have trouble with the cliff shots, gels, etc..., so I can't fathom pounding Doritos. But hey, if it worked for Dean and you can stomach it, why not.
Hmmm, maybe I could do Snickers, but then you have the melting problem...lol.
I am a huge fan of the PBJ for long bike rides and runs. They've got lots of calories, a little protein, are solid enough that it feels like you're eating something, yet squishy enough that they go down without much effort. Personally I'd stay away from greasy junk foods, but sugary junk foods can be great. I find that flat coke is nice when I am sick of gatorade. it has almost double the calories. sprinkle some salt in there (seriously) and you've got high powered gatorade, just without the potassium.

Ironman triathletes often add a product like CarboPro to get extra carbs in their sports drinks. You can mix them to your desired strength and I've heard some IM athletes put 700-800 cals in a bike bottle (I could only handle 500-600). As they do, you will likely be limited as to how many calories your body can absorb per hour while running, however, so it will be important for you to get as much as you can during lesser intense activities (biking for IM athletes, or resting for you) before running. Don't forget to also analyze your electrolyte needs. Salty foods and/or salt caps may be necessary as well.
